The 120-year old KEPCO founded in 1898 as Hansung Electric Company is gearing up for another 100 years with ‘New Area, New Contents’.

Since its foundation as HansungElectric Power Co. in 1898, KEPCO has been driving Korea’s rapid economic and industrial growth as the reliable supplier of electric power.
Now, with new vision of 'Smart Energy Creator', KEPCO is writing a new chapter of history under the spirits of 'New Area, New Contents'.

Turned the first electric lights on (Geonchung Palace inside Gyeongbok Palace)

Lighted three streetlamps in Jongno by Hansung Electric Company (first-ever lighting in public area)

ompleted Supung Hydro Power Plant (600,000 kW)
1961
established Korea Electric Power Company with Electricity Enterprises Act (three electric companies were merged)
1964
Cleared limited electric power transmission for the first time since national liberation
1965
Declared Act on the Promotion of Electrification in Agricultural and Fishing Villages
1968
Exceeded one million kW in electric power generation capacity
1978
Completed 1st unit of Kori Nuclear Power Plant (587,000kW)
1982
Launched Korea Electric Power Corporation
1989
Listed on the Korea Stock Exchange as people’s share No. 2
1994
Listed on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time
1995
Won bid to operate Malaya power plant in the Philippines
1997
Broke ground for KEDO nuclear power plant construction

Exceeded 40 million kW in maximum demand electric power

Spun the business off into six power generation subsidiaries

Completed Ilijan Gas combined cycle power plant, the largest in the Philippines

Increased voltage to 220V for distribution line, and commenced electric power supply to Gaesung Industrial Complex
2006
Awarded Edison Award, and launched independent project division
2009
Exported nuclear power plant to overseas for the first time (UAE)
2011
Selected as corrupt-free institute for six years in a row in anti-corruption evaluation, and ranked first in customer satisfaction for 13 years in a row
2012
Ranked first in customer satisfaction in the public sector for 14 years in a row
Completed Al Qatrana power plant in Jordan
2013
Hosted the World Energy Congress, the world’s largest and most influential energy event, in Daegu
2014
Relocated to Bitgaram Innovation City, opening the Energy Valley era
2015
Successfully held Bitgaram International Exposition on Electric Power Technology (BIXPO) 2015
2016
Was named the top electric utility in the Forbes Global 2000
Won a 2016 CI0100 Award, a first for a Korean company
Selected as the top electric utility in the 2016 Platts Top 250 global energy company rankings
Signed a joint venture agreement for the operation of the UAE power plant
